Turf football

Me and my mates played some ball today. The court was booked by a friend's dad who was there to watch how my friends play as a team.

Honestly I find soccer fun but I lag way behind in skill to keep up with the well practiced players my friends already are. And as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover. Two of the impressive players are people you wouldn't normally think be physically active. Yet once you give them a ball and court to play in, they can prove you wrong with some great moves.

maybe I should buy a ball and start practicing ah...

Training

While it's easy to complain about how annoying NS can be... let's admit it.. you're going to be stuck here to serve 2 years anyway. Why not make the best of it?

There's free lodging, food, and access to the pool and gym. So while these 2 years are not the best circumstances to live out the life you had before enlistment, it certainly gives you ample opportunity to push your fitness up.

And I enjoy exercise. It feeds you endorphins to brighten your mood and there's always that satisfaction of seeing an improvement in your fitness. And of course it's beneficial to your overall health.

So today would be 1 month after I started committing to a healthier and fitter lifestyle. A good amount of time was spent at the gym, followed by some swimming and a light run in the cold night after dinner. Gonna continue to be disciplined and not fall into a trap of becoming lazy again :)

Flag Day - Siquan Quake Relief

To be truthful, I was really nervous about doing this. Somehow, I have never been comfortable with approaching strangers for donations. Especially when you know you're going to meet nasty rude unsympathetic people along the way.

People avoid eye contact, pretend they did not hear you, brush you aside with a wave of their hand (as if we're flies) or simply stare indifferently at you.

Aside from that, what's with this one security guard. Yes, we know we're not supposed to solicit funds in shopping malls. We were standing outside. Apparently you claim we still needed a permit to stand outside your mall.

Fine we'll move, but did you have to to rudely tell us to go away?

"Where's your permit? Go away. If you want do this, go somewhere else to do it."

Geez, we're volunteers working for a good cause. The tone was unnecessary and seems to only reinforce what what society seems to think of Flag Day.

But I'm generalizing here on anecdotal accounts. To be fair, I met some kind and generous Singaporeans out there as well.

Some called out to me or approached me on their own accord. One uncle even said to me,

"The sun is hot. Make sure you drink enough water ok?" As he slotted a 2 dollar note into the can. Kudos to him. Singapore needs more people like him.

So after 4 hours, the flag day ends, and all the volunteers returned with cans clinking of all the coins inside them.

My legs are tired from all the walking and standing. Hilariously, my jaw aches from all that smiling.

I guess it wasn't too bad. And I felt I've gained something meaningful from doing this. Though no more flag days for me.. Not anytime soon...

Tutoring kids

It's really nostalgic, how I used to be on the other end.. sitting down as a student and listening to our teacher explaining about energy and living matter. (Primary school science). Now, I've become the one who's teaching.

And when I tutored this kid who's really keen on learning and a natural at understand a science concept that's never been taught to him yet, I just recalled how fun learning used to be. Where it was just about curiosity and letting yourself explore, which is what education should really be honestly.

It's not supposed to be about grades, competitions or the number of Olympiad medals you can get. It's about getting that spark that pushes you on to know more.

Today was really unplanned and only happened because an old friend approached me for help. Perhaps the world is trying to remind me of something. Hmm.

Crazy hot weather this past week. Thankful there's been a few showers or ppl would have mistaken Singapore to be a desert.

The 1 year mark

10.More.Months

And so many things have happened. So many has changed. Feeling so lost, frustrated. Annoyed, angry. Affected by the negative atmosphere of the office.

What happened to the fun camaraderie that we had? Even I begin to distrust myself with what I feel or think. Just want to tear myself apart.

I really miss the old times. It's a deceivingly calm ocean of fierce currents.

Balloon Sculpting class

There was a free balloon sculping class held at the neighbourhood RC. I had nothing on that particular Sunday, so I joined the class. Turns out that I was the only youth there (damn I can't call myself a teenager anymore). Most of the participants turned out to be adults.

But I had fun. Turns out I'm still afraid of balloons at this age.

Tryingto figure out what I'm supposed to do next
